Butterfly Adventures at the Fair
Butterfly Adventures is the only interactive butterfly experience on the West Coast. Other butterfly facilities such as the Seattle Science Center and Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California (the closest butterfly attractions) let visitors look and take pictures of butterflies in a tropical setting. Butterfly Adventures takes this very popular experience to the next level by teaching visitors how to feed and interact with the butterflies, thereby connecting people to the wonder of nature, one butterfly at a time.
Visitors of all ages will have a chance to interact with hundreds of butterflies in a beautiful garden like setting full of hanging plants and flowers. “We have over a thousand butterflies that we rotate in with about 500 butterflies at a time” said Peter Noah, owner of Butterfly Adventures. “This is done so we don’t overwhelm our visitors with too many butterflies flying around.”
Visitors are given instructions on how to feed the butterflies with special nectar sticks that acts like a flower to the butterflies. Visitors can see a butterfly drinking the nectar. Visitors are also given guidelines on how to interact with the butterflies safely, including to be careful where they step since Painted Ladies have a tendency to land on the ground, thereby making it easier for the little children to pick up the butterflies.
“You really can’t feel a butterfly sitting on you; it could be on your head, shoulders, legs and so on,” noted Peter Noah. “But you can definitely feel them tickling your nose, your face or hands! The experience of feeding the butterflies and having them land all over your body is a perfect opportunity for selfies. It’s a unique experience that you can’t experience anywhere else and you’ll have pictures of this once in a life time encounter that will last for a life time.”
The butterflies also like to hitch a ride out with the guests. So guests are asked to look at themselves in the mirror as they exit to make sure there are no “hitchhikers” on their backs, hats, or perched on their hair. The responses from the visitors after they exit the exhibit have been: That was awesome! Or that was unbelievable! Or it’s the best thing at the fair! It’s a rare, fun, and engaging family experience that kids can share with their parents and grandparents and adults can share with their kids and grandkids while learning a little bit about the butterflies.
